C. Read the text about Tutankhamun. Try to answer the following questions to the text. Compare your answers with the partner sitting next to you (about 5 min).

1. Why did it take so much time to find the tomb of Tutankhamun?

2. What are two theories of why the pharaoh died at the age of 18?

3. Why was Tutankhamun's tomb smaller than other Pharaos' tombs?

Tutankhamun was born a prince of Egypt around 1341 BC. He was only nine years old when he became pharaoh and about 18 when he died. His father died when Tutankhamun was seven years old. A few years later King Tut married his own sister, which was a common custom for Pharaos in ancient Egypt.  Since he was a very young ruler, he had help to run the country from a powerful general named Horemhheb and a counsellor named Ay.

Archeologists aren't sure what killed King Tut. Some think that he was assassinated, but a likely cause of his death was a wound to his leg. Scientists have determined that the leg of his mummy was broken and badly infected before his death. This injury probably happened from an accident.

Due to his untimely death his subjects were rushed to build his tomb in a hurry. It was very small compared to the tombs of some other Pharaos in the Valley of the Kings. Due to the fact that his tomb was so small it was overlooked by robbers for thousands of years.

In 1922 a British archaeologist named Howard Carter entered King Tutankhamun's tomb for the very first time. It was filled with treasure and artifacts anlike any others found in Pharaos' tombs. Some robbers might have been there before Carter because a bag of gold rings was found on the floor as if dropped in a hurry. Luckily they did not manage to take everything because Carter and his team found many treasures inside, including he famous solid gold mask on King Tut's mummy.
