This webquest is part of a set of two webquests exploring the rise of the United States from its proclamation in 1776 to it becoming a world power by 1914. In Part 1, you will focus on this question: - How did the original 13 colonies expand into a nation reaching from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean? What effect did this expansion have on the demography and the economy of the new country? The assignments below wil guide you through your work book pp. 32-42. (For those who didn't receive the copies, look for them on Teams History 5; Folder "Modern Imperialism", "New World Powers"). Don't hesitate to discuss the tasks with your colleagues through the Teams chat. |
Please note that whenever you click on a word, an explanation will appear on the right.

Manifest Destiny: Analysis of a Painting
Go to page 33 in your work book. Have a good look at the painting. Could you figure out by yourself which message the painter was trying to convey?
Click on the video below to open the presentation in a new window. (If it doesn't open, you may find the video on Teams as well). Watch the video (1') and take notes in your work book.

The expansion of the USA was driven by massive immigration. In the next douments, you'll have a closer look at the immigration policies and the effect on the demography.
Mass Immigration into the USA: Study of a Graph
Study the graphs on the top of p. 34. What do they tell you about the evolution of the demography in the United States between 1750 and 1850? Write down your conclusions under the graphs.
Tips
1° Take into account the different scale of both graphs.
2° Make sure you draw conclusions about the evolution of each of the population groups, and of the balance between them.
Study the map on p. 34 of your work book. Look up the corresponding map in your history atlas (knowing you will be allowed to use the atlas during tests and exams.)
From which continents came the people that immigrated into the United States? Range the continents: 1= Most migrants (quote a number) → 3= Least migrants (quote a number)
Extra (you may skip this): Millions of migrants enterend the USA through Ellis Island. Here's a little video about it. (3').
Extra: Did you know that Antwerp has a museum tells the story of the migrants going from Europe to the USA by taking the Red Star Line. Check it out pn the internet.
On the top of the next page, you'll find a few documents that show a whole business was developed around the migration from Europe to the USA.
In favour or against immigration? Analysing historic documents
Analysing a text
Read on that page attentively.
| After 1763, British authorities began to limit immigration because settlement of the West made the colonies harder to defend. In 1774, Parliament cut off immigration to the colonies entirely. The colonists, on the other hand, were by now so thoroughly convinced that immigration meant growth and prosperity that the British domestic policy of restricting emigration was listed in the Declaration of Independence as one of the reasons for breaking political ties with the mother country. Political leaders still occasionally expressed concern about the political reliability of immigrants and declared the need for their assimilation into English colonial culture. Nevertheless, the United States began its career as an independent nation with a totally open immigration policy. There were no qualitative restrictions. The waiting period for naturalization was only two years (changed to five years in 1795). The Constitution denied no national office except the Presidency to the foreign born. |
Would you say the United States was a nation that was open to immigration or against it? Highlight the relevant words in the text. Write the answer in your work book.
Analysing a cartoon
The poster on the tight of this text refers to the USA being a "melting pot". Look on the web for an explanation of this concept. Write it in your work book under the cartoon.
Extra: can you figure out which is the element that does not fit?
Analysing cartoon
Go to page 36.
Effect of Mass Immigration on the Native Americans
We have discussed the migration policies of the USA. But what was the effect of mass immigration on the Native Americans?
Listen to the video. Write down the four concepts that describe the effect the expansion of the USA towards the West had on the Native Americans. Explain each briefly.
(This video seems to give trouble on some computers, as it is rather heavy. If it does not open well, you may copy this link into the toolbar of your search engine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3knJOD3uNw&t=449s Or search in YouTube for "How did Westward Expansion Affect the Native Americans.) You may start at 00:25, and cut off at 07:20)
Which of the concepts you discussed figures in the map below?
After watching this video, you should be able to comment on the pictures below. What does it represent? What is the link with the story that was told in the video?

Well done! You have now finished the first part of the assignment. You learned about the intracontinental expansion of the USA in the first half of the 19th century. You may want to read up the corresponding paragraphs on pp. 12-13 in your TEXT book before continuing.
If you still have questions, post them in the Team History 5 chat. Your colleagues may know the answer!
