COOL - Malta Film Tour

This is a task based activity for students to explore Malta through the eyes of the camera lens. The students have to draw up a map and itinery for a one day tour to specific locations used during the filming of a film of their own choice.

Introduction

Process

Task 1 (Reading)

Have you ever been on a real film set? Would you like to experience this for yourself? In Malta you have the chance to do so. Many people don´t even know it, but Malta is an international hot spot in the film industry. We´re not talking about little niche films, but real Hollywood blockbusters. The following films were shot wholly or partly in Malta: Gladiator, with Russel Crowe; Troy, with Brad Pitt and Orlando Bloom; Alexander, with Colin Farrell and Angelina Jolie; Asterix and Obelix and many more. Thus, if you would like to see the filming locations, you have the possibility to do this in Malta.

Valletta was the most popular location in films, just pipping Gozo to the honour, being used for 20 of the 242 filmed there in the past 20 years. Gozo was used 18 times, according to research by Go Compare Travel. Overall, Malta was the 81st most filmed country in the world, with the US topping the country list with 139,506 films made there, well ahead of the second placed UK, with 25,768.

The most popular film locations in Malta are:

1. Valletta - Fort St Elmo, Harbour of Jerusalem (Murder on the Orient Express, World War Z, Captain Phillips) 20 movies filmed.
2. Gozo Island - Ramla Bay (Game of Thrones - Season 1, By the Sea) 18 movies filmed.
3. Kalkara - Fort Ricasoli, (Gladiator) 10 movies filmed.
4. Comino -Blue Lagoon (The Count of Monte Cristo, Troy) 7 movies filmed
5. Senglea (Immediate Boarding), 5 movies filmed.

Choose your favourite film from the information at Motion Blur and Loving Malta

Alternatively you can check these sites by selecting the buttons at the top or bottom of the page.

Task 4

Watch the following videos

Task 5

Once you have chosen the film prepare a short summary of the film and the reasons why you like it. You will have to present this summary to the members of your group. You can use the resource library of film trailers below if you wish.

Task 6

You will be divided into groups. Each member of the group will present his or her summary to the group. The group will decide which film to cover for this project. Each group will tackle a different film.

Task 7

Depending on the film that your group has chosen use Google Maps to find the locations used during the filming. You will need this information to draw up an itinery for a one day tour.  The tour must take the following into consideration.

Below is an example of a bus ride to the Comino ferry. This takes 56 minutes and then the boat to Comino takes another 15 minutes. Taking traffic into consideration, I would allow 1.5 hours to reach destination.

Task 7

Presentation of the tour to potential tourists together with advertising and informative material in electronic or printed format.
