Healthy Eating as part of a Healthy Lifestyle

Which diet best supports healthy eating?

This is a webquest that seeks to answer this question.

Introduction

  • There's a lot of advice out there on how to eat healthy, and if we're being honest, it can sometimes feel like too much to think about. Especially when you're hungry.
  • Today, knowing how to eat healthy doesn't seem quite as straightforward. Between the diet fads, gourmet trends, and a rotating roster of superfoods and diets, eating well has become, well, complicated.
  • By researching different diets and how they compare to the criteria for healthy eating, the students will be able to make an informed opinion about which diet best supports a healthy lifestyle.

Task

  • In this webquest, you will be researching what constitutes a healthy diet and analysing one particular diet to decide whether it sustains a healthy lifestyle.
  • Working in groups, you will follow the instructions on the process page.
  • You will follow the links provided to the appropriate websites and pages.
  • You will complete the column reserved for your diet by answering the questions in the graphic organiser.
  • You will create a presentation to describe your diet to the class
  • As you research this topic, keep in mind the criteria for a healthy diet as presented in the Eatwell guide.
  • You will have a series of lessons for this task.

Process

 Tasks for the whole class:

  • You will work in groups of four.
  • Start by clicking Wordart  and find a definition for 'Healthy Eating'. This definition should be the first slide after the title slide in your presentation. You will also be basing your arguments for or against your diet on this definition.
  • In your readings you will come across the use of Time Clauses for Future Tense. Click the green button 'language exercise'to read more about this structure and to work out an exercise about.
  • Next watch the video on the left hand side of this page and read the Eatwell article 1 in the green buttons below, to find out what constitutes a balanced diet, take some notes, then complete task 1
  • Read the next article about what constitutes healthy eating and do the crossword puzzle. Follow the link in the green button

 Tasks for the individual groups:

  • Group 1 will study the health, benefits and risks of the Paleo Diet.
  • Group 2 will study the health, benefits and risks of the Vegetarian Diet.
  • Group 3 will study the health benefits and risks of the Mediterranean Diet.
  • Group 4 will study the health benefits and risks of the Keto Diet.
  • Prepare a presentation about your diet.
  • The last slide of your presentation will be a poster about the main points related to the diet you have been researching. To do this diet go to Canva.com.
  • Fill in the graphic organiser, in the green bottons, with information about your diet. This graphic organiser indicates the basic information you will need to include in your presentation.
  • You will fill in the other columns with information from the other presentations.

Task for the whole class:

  • Finally you will participate in a class discussion in order to find out which of the diets you have researched is the best diet that sustains healthy living.

Evaluation

  • You will evaluate your performance during this webquest by marking the rubric appropriately.
  • You will use the rubric below to evaluate yourselves as a group.
  • The teacher will also fill in the rubric for the group and for you individually and discuss it with you

Conclusion

Now that you have had a chance to look at different diets and what they stand for, you will be able to take more informed decisions about what to eat in order to enjoy a healthy lifestyle.

Teacher's Notes

  • The language covered in this lesson will consist of review vocabulary related to food and properties of food (nutrients, vitamins, ...)
  • Time Clauses for Future time is a structure that comes up in the texts;
  • Using gerunds for subjects of a sentence is another structure in the texts that the students will get some practise in.
