This is a Clilstore unit. You can .
In this activity we are going to edit the main article of our planes magazine. This will consist on a cover page and three pages merging text and pictures. The starting point is the magazine cover page activity.
It is important to keep in mind that the main principles of graphic design are accuracy and symmetry. Your work will look fine if it is perfectly aligned, symmetrically distributed and regularly spaced. The accurate symmetry is what gives a document the distinctive tidiness, of a professional layout. In this activity an important part of the mark will assess the accuracy of the alignment, and symmetry of spacing among objects. A work looking sloppy or shabby will be penalized with up to a 50% of the mark
Open the Scribus project made in the previous activity (Magazine page cover).
Log in Moodle and open the quiz associated wtith the activity. In this quiz you will be assigned the name of a plane about which your article will talk. You must search on Internet the following list of pictures from this plane:
An imagen size A4 that will cover the whole first page. Look for an image of the plane, in high resolution, over 800x1200 dots, and vertical orientation. (other possible option may be a horizontal image that can be rotated vertically, or from which it is possible to extract a vertical section)
A horizontal picture size half an A4 page
Several little images
Search in the web the images listed above and save them in the project folder
Save a first version of your magazine as articulo_avionesv1.sla.
Then save another version as articulo_avionesv2.sla and carry on working on it.
Use the option fitxer→recull per a eixir in order to make a backup copy of the project in other folder.
Save the document every 5 o 10 minutes in order to prevent Scribus crashes
Place the cursor in the page 2 and insert an image frame mqtching the the printable part of the page, (meaning from margin upper left to margin lower right), selecting the menu Insertar | mostra els marcs (Insert |frame). Select image frame. In the tab Location (rotació in valencian) set the insertion of a frame in the page 2 located in the upper left border.
In the tab Size (mida) set the option Same as page margins (fes servir els margens de la impressora)so that the image takes up the whole space between the page margins
Finally in the tab Options, click in source (font) and select the image you have chosen as the article main image. The result after adjusting the image to the frame size must be something like this:
Block this image, we don’t want it to be altered or moved accidentally while working in the article (contextual menu→ block/bloquear/esta bloquejat )
In this activity we are going to render an eye-catching article headline using GIMP. This program is an excellent freeware editor of photography.
To start GIMP select in the desktop main menu Aplicaciones | Gráficos | GIMP
Once the GIMP main window is opened, select the menu option Fichero | Crear |Logotipos. This option is similar to Libre Office Writer Fontworks, and will open a window with all the tools needed to render a striking title from a little text. For starters, select the option cromat
Insert the text assigned to you in Moodle as the article title
The result must look like this
For the time being, we are only interested in the text F-22 RAPTOR, therefore, let’s disable the gray background layer. In the upper right part of the screen you should see the layer panel. This window shows the layers making up the image. One of them is called Background and contains the background color in the back of the text. To disable it you must click in the eye icon. (see image below)
As a result the background disappears from the scene and is replaced by a checked pattern. This checked pattern is the way GIMP (and many other programs) represents a transparent color
Now, we must open the title from Scribus. First export the image to a PNG file using the menu option Fichero | exportar.
In the field tipo de archivo (red arrow in the image) select the option Imagen PNG. Click in the button exportar. Then the window shown below will open showing the export to PNG default settings. Make sure that the option Guarda el valor de los colores de pixel transparentes is enabled
Let’s return to the Scribus window. Insert an image frame in the page, below the plane and insert the png file we have just exported in GIMP.
Make the second line of your headline using the same procedure
It could be objected that this arrangement looks a bit dull. There are alternatives, for example, laying out the text in two or three lines:
First, duplicate the image frame containing the headlines. In this case of study the text is 'El caza del siglo XXI'. Select the frame and click on the menu Item/element --> Duplica. Do the same with the subtitle assigned to you. If it is too long divide it in three lines, duplicating the frame twice
Move the duplicated frame below the original. If there are two copies, move them below each other
Modify the frame width, leaving visible only the part of the text corresponding with every line. For example in this case of study in the first line, we have reduced the text frame width, leaving visible only the text 'El caza del'
Modify the size of the rest of lines in order to fragment it in several lines. In this case of study we leave visible the word siglo in the second line and XXI in the third line
Once split in different lines we can arrange the lines to fit the available space in the best possible way.
Perform again the security procedure to prevent loss of information due to Scribus crashes:
Save the project.
Save the project with a different name.
Select the menu option Fichero/fitxer --> recolectar para salir / recullper a eixir.
Close the documet, close scribus
Open Scribus and open the last version of the file. Carry on working on it
The text in a magazine, typically is arranged in two or three columns for several reasons. The wider the text line, the more difficult is for the reader to keep track of the parallel lines. The use of columns make reading cushier. And from a designer standpoint, it also makes easier the layout allowing for a more flexible use of the space.
There are two ways of inserting several columns:
Inserting a text frame with the text arranged in columns. This is the more suitable and easier way, but it presents a disadvantage: all columns must have the same length
The alternative option is to build the columns manually one bye one, using three different text frames, of same width but different height. It's costlier but allows to make the most of the space available. This is the option you are required to perform.
Insert a text frame 55mm wide and all the vertical space available, that is, the columns shouldn’t overlap the plane in the image, so all the vertical space between the lower margin and the plane Note: when you insert the text frame it is empty. Never mind, the introduction of text will come later.
Create two copies of the text frame duplicating it twice using the menu Item/Element --> Duplicar
Move the copies of the text frames to their position as shown in the image below. Don't change their width and keep a space between of columns of between 3 and 5 mm.
Change the text frames height so that they take up all the vertical space available between the bottom margin and the subtitles
To carry on we will add some automatically generated stuffing text. The Stuffing text is a nonsense text generated randomly and is used to make the draft of the layout before having the real text . The classical stuffing text, is one called Lorem Ipsum, and is based in a Latin text from Cicero. Lorem ipsum's stuffing texts always starts with the same sentence "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet”, and goes on with a gibberish of random latin words which sounds convincingly latin but actually have no real sense.
Select the left frame and activate the option Texto de muestra from the contextual menu. Select the default options and set it up for 20 paragraphs of text.
If you activate the contextual menu option editar texto, you will realize that most of the text generated doesn’t appear because it doesn’t fit in the frame. Notice there is a little X in a square in the lower right part of the text frame. This mark is used to indicate that the frame text contains an excess of text and part of I that can not be shown.
we must make flow the excess of text from the left to the center frame:
Select the left text frame
Click in the button 'Enlaza marco de texto' in the main tool bar
Click in the center text frame. The text will fill up the center frame, and a mark of excess of text (the X square) will appear in the center text frame showing that there is to much text to show it in the frame
Repeat the operation linking the central frame with the right frame. After this the excess text mark will move to the left frame indicating there are still more text than the shown in the text frame
Set justified alignment for the three frames: select one column, select all its text and on the text properties window and click in the button texto justificado. Repeat with the rests of columns
Perform again the security procedure to prevent loss of information due to Scribus crashes:
Save the project.
Save the project with a different name.
Select the menu option Fichero | recolectar para salir.
Close the document close Scribus,
Open Scribus and open the last version of the file and carry on working
Next step will be to highlight the first letter in the first paragraph
Select the first letter on the first paragraph on the left text frame (In this case of study is the 'L' letter in the word Lorem ipsum
Increase its size to 60, (only the L).
Turn this letter into a subscript letter so that it moves under the base line where it is placed, clicking in the subindice button in the properties panel, ( contextual menu, propiedades as shown in the image below)
The big L might overlap the second line as shown in the image below
To solve this problem, put the cursor just before the word 'amet' and insert a number of non separable space using ctrl+space bar or the menu option INSERIR --> ESPAIS I SEPARACIONS --> ESPAI NO SEPARABLE). Insert as many non separable break as needed
It is convenient that you insert another non separable space before 'orem' to get a better result. It must look like this:
Add a shadow effect to the letter using the sombra button in the text panel of the properties window (contextual menu, properties)
Unfortunately, both the background and the shadow are very dark, turning the shadow invisible. We must change its color. Click in the button Outline, and choose a border color. It must be darker than the letter, but less dark than the background
ALIGNMENT OF THE TEXT IN THE TEXT FRAMES
There is an anomaly we must sort out before going on. The lines of text aren't vertically aligned among the frames. Look at the two blue lines in the image below (they are guide lines). This two lines mark the base position of the last line in the left and center text frame. As you can see they are in disarray.
To vertically align the text among the frames:
Make sure the three frames are aligned in their base with the bottom margin of the page. In the image you can see that the left frame is not and must be moved down to fit the bottom margin line
Align the text lines among the frames. Select the left frame, open the contextual menu and select the panel texto
Click in the button columns and text distances from the texto panel in the properties window. This will show a number of controls allowing to set the position of the text inside the frame
Use the controls Arriba (Dalt) and Abajo (Baix) to move up and down the text inside the frame. Align the lines in the left frame with those in the center frame.
Repeat the procedure this time aligning the right frame with the center frame.
Adjust the gap among text frames. We want the same distance between the left and center frames, and the center and right frames. You are not allowed to change the width of the text frames (all they must have the same width).
Make sure the left and right frames are perfectly matching the right and left page margins
Make sure the three frames have the same width
Put the central frame in the horizontal center of the page. If the right and left frames are correctly located, and the center frame in perfectly in the center of the page, the distance between it and the other two frames will be exactly the same. You can easily make this following these steps:
Select the center frame and drop down its properties window
In the X,Y,Z section select as basepoint the central point of the frame.
Now wee need some maths: the page is 210mm width, the horizontal central coordinate must be in 105mm. Put this value in the field X-Pos to move there the frame
The left and right frames must match the margins, which is correct in most layouts but not in this case, since there is an image in the background, also matching the margins. We need some margin between the text and the background image.
Move the right frame 2,5mm to the left. Add 2,5mm to the X-pos field in the properties window
Move the left frame 2,5 mm to the right. Substract 2,5mm to the X-pos field in the properties window
The result must look like this.
Perform again the security procedure to prevent loss of information due to Scribus crashes:
Save the project.
Save the project with a different name.
Select the menu option Fichero | recolectar para salir.
Close the document, close scribus
Open Scribus, open the last version of the file, and carry on working
Next step is to set up a footpage consisting on: The name of the magazine with a copyright sign, the number of the page and the total number of pages
Insert a text frame under the lower margin , just in the center of the page
Put the cursor in the frame double clicking it.
Select the menu option Insertar | carácter | número de página.
Write an space, a slash, and other space. In other words, write this: ' / '.
Insert the total number of pages with the option Insertar | carácter | número de páginas/Nombre de págines.
Align the text to the center of the frame. (properties window→panel text→click in the button alineación centrada
Create another text frame under the bottom margin, this time aligned to the left margin. Write the name of your magazine. Use the properties window to make sure the frame is aligned to the left margin. Aligned the text to the right
Insert another text frame aligned with the right margin and write the 'Editorial' and your name. Align the text to the right
Add a copyright character beside the name of the editorial using the menu Insertar | carácter | copyright
A last detail. Use a horizontal guide line to align vertically the three text frames.
Perform again the security procedure to prevent loss of information due to Scribus crashes:
Save the project.
Save the project with a different name.
Select the menu option Fichero | recolectar para salir.
Close the document, Close scribus.
Open Scribus and open the last version of the filea and carry on working
We've made a foot page for the page 2... but what about the rest of the document? Are we supposed to repeat this operation with all pages in this document? That might be feasible in our 5 pages document but exhausting in a longer one, let's say some 500 pages for example.
In addition there is another problem. This footpage is suitable for the right (even) pages but, in those of the left (odd pages) we must reflex the texts, that is, the name of the magazine should be matching the inside (right) margin instead of the the outside (left) one.
THIS IS INCORRECT
THIS IS CORRECT: The editorial name should placed in the inside part of the document and magazine name should be in the outside part.
We will define a master page to set up a different footpage for the right and left pages. A master page is a predefined layout, which elements will appear in all the pages where the master page is applied. We will define a master page for odd pages and another for even pages.
We can't use the page 2 as master a page for even pages, because in this page we have already inserted a number of elements ( the picture of the plane, the text frames) that are not supposed to be copied to all the even pages. We only want to copy the footpage of the page 2 in the rest of even pages.
Select the three text frames in the foot page in page 2. You can easily do it drawing a big rectangle with the cursor, encompassing them. Make sure you only select these three text frames
Cut them to the clipboard (edición cortar o Ctrl+X)
Click in the page 4. This page is blank for the time being
Paste from the clipboard ( edición | pegar o Ctrl+V)
Make sure everything keep correctly aligned ans distributed
Make sure that the currently selected page is the page 4. Create a master page for the even pages, clicking in in the menu option Pagina | convertir a página maestra/converteix a pàgina mestra.
Name the master page and make sure that the selected option is Left page
Now we will apply the master page to all left pages in the document, except the first page, which contains the magazine cover.
Select the menu option Página | aplicar página maestra/aplica la pàgina mestra.
In the drop down list página maestra select the name you wrote for the master page
Select even pages/pàgines parelles so that it is applied to the even pages (left pages)
Set within Range 2 to 5. this will prevent the master page to be applied to page 1
Now the foot page must appear in all even pages in the document.
Create a master page for the odd pages ( right pages):
Copy from the page 4 the three text frames and paste them in the page 3
Move the editorial name to the inside margin, In other words align it with the left margin. Use guide lines to ensure you align it properly.
Move the magazine name to the outside margin, In other words align it with the right margin. Use guide lines to ensure you align it properly.
Make sure the three text frames are correctly aligned each other
Create a master page based in this page for the odd pages (right pages)
Apply the master page to all odd pages (option odd pages / nomes pàgines senars) excluding the page 1
Perform again the security procedure to prevent lose of information due to Scribus crashes:
Save the project.
Save the project with a different name.
Select the menu option Fichero | recolectar para salir.
Close the document, close Scribus
Open Scribus and open the last version of the filea and carry on working
in the Moodle quizz associated to this activity you will find the images needed to make this part of the exercise. Unload the images in your project folder and decompress them
We will arrange the text in three columns again, but this time in a single frame instead of three different text frames. Create a new text frame with the size and position shown in the image below. The result must be a frame matching the margins perfectly.
Let's set three columns in this frame:
Select the text panel in the frame properties window.
Click in the button Columns and text distances
Select 3 columns
Set up the same gap between columns you left in the previous page. You will need to measure it, using line guides and the ruler under the main tool bar
Select a space on the right and left of 2,5 mm (as we did in the previous page)
Link the text in the right frame in page 2 with the frame you have just made in page 3. Select the left text frame in page 2, click in the button 'Enlaza marco de texto' in the main tool bar , click in the text frame in page 3.
The surplus of text in page 2 will flow to the frame in page 3. But it keeps having the clear color it had in page 2. You must change the color for black using the text panel in the properties window of the frame.
The text frame takes up about half of the page. Add an image frame taking up the other half of the page, leaving a margin on its right side (see image below). Insert in this frame the image of the plane
In the space left free on the right side we are going to highlight some interesting tips about the plane.
Select a shape and insert it. It can be an ellipse, a rectangle, a square, or any other shape available in the menu option Insertar | Shapes | default shapes, (or use the button Insertar forma (highlighted in the image below)
In this case of study we've inserted a circle and we have flattened it turning it into an ellipse but you can choose whatever shape you like the most. Give it also an area color.
Draw a text frame inside the shape and write here the text you will find in the quizz. Format it in bold letters and increase its size as much as possible so that it takes up most of the space available in the text frame.
Select again the shape (the shape, not the text frame) and duplicate it with the menu option Item / element | duplicar
Change the color of the duplicated shape to some gray color as Gray 25
Use the down, and left arrow keys to move the shape down and to the left. Just press three times each key.
Put the gray key in the background under the other shape. It must look like a shadow effect
We are going to group the three objects so that they behave as a single object. Select the three objects (two shapes and the text frame) and click in the option Item/element | agrupar or press CTRL+G
Finally block the position of the grouped object to prevent accidental modification using the option bloquear from the contextual menu
Insert a rectangle shape below the ellipse, give it a color and rotate it 45º clicking the button girar objeto from the main toolbar. The cursor will change allowing you to drag the rectangle from one of its corners.
Draw a text frame over the rectangle and write the second tip from the quizz
Create another shape effect for the rectangle, (duplicate it, give it gray color and move it down-left
Group the three objects and block their position
Repeat the process with a third shape for another tip. You must give to it a shadow effect again, group it, and block its position
Add a low size additional image, taking up the space left . Keep in mind that this second image will partially overlap a part of the text in the text frame.
Some of the text or the article is lost, overlapped by the second image and this is unacceptable. We must force the text flow around the image using the button usar frame shape, from the panel forma, from the properties window.
Perform again the security procedure to prevent loss of information due to Scribus crashes:
Save the project.
Save the project with a different name.
Select the menu option Fichero | recolectar para salir
Close the document, close Scribus
Open Scribus and open the last version of the filea and carry on working
The main element of this page (apart the text) will be a number of pictures, each one with a legend ..
Insert a text frame with three columns, with the same features used in the page 3. This frame must take up the entire printable page from margin to margin
Link the frame with the frame in page 3 so that the text flow from it filling the columns in this frame
Add an image in the upper side of the page. To avoid losing text under the image, we must make flow it around the image. Click the button usar frame shape from the panel forma in the properties window. If it works the lost text will reappear.
Create a text over the image to write a legend for the image. Fill up the text frame with some stuffing text (contextual menu | texto de relleno). Give it a size and color adjusted to the size of the text
Group the text and image frame using contextual menu | agrupar)
At last you have finished the task.
Save the project.
Save the project with a different name.
Select the menu option Fichero | recolectar para salir
Close the document, close Scribus
Open Scribus and open the last version of the filea and carry on working
Compress the project folder including the recojer para terminar folder and send it using e-mail to the address
