To sum up
The instrumen families are made up of 4 main families: percussion, strings, brass and woodwinds.
Percussion Family: Are struck with mallets or sticks. Somer percussion instruments are pitched wich can play different notes or sound (ex: Xylophone).
Brass family: are played by "buzzing" the lips into the mouthpiece.
Woodwings: woodwings instrument produce a sound by blowing into a mouthpiece. Some of them use a reed to make the sounds play.
Strings family: they are the most numerous in the orchestras. The strings may be plucked, as in a guitar or harp; bowed, as with a cello or a violin; or struck, as with a dulcimer. This creates a vibration that causes a unique sound.
