Malaria is an infectious disease caused by protozoan Plasmodium sp which was discovered in the late nineteenth century. This parasite is transmitted to humans through the bite of a mosquito of the genus Anopheles.
The parasite is difficult to eradicate because it has a complex life cycle that requires two hosts (mosquito and human) and also affects many human cells in each phase change. Currently, the research is focused on treating disease with drugs and research to provide a vaccine, and on the other hand, the action against the mosquito that transmits the disease.
Actually there are many countries affected by malaria, but you have to pay special attention to what are listed below:
• Niger
• DRC
• Angola
• Ethiopia
• India
• Thailand
• Indonesia
• Myanmar (Burma)
At the following links you will find interactive maps where you must extract the percentage of the total population affected by malaria for each of the countries mentioned. Then compare the results obtained in Africa and Asia. Are there striking differences? If there is, what may be due to?
