Pythagorean Theorem
Introduction
This is a 2-hour CLIL Module for the Pythagorean Theorem and the calculus of the unknow side of a rectangle triangle. It is aimed at students at 2nd ESO (13-14 years old).
At the end of this unit, most students will:
This 2-hour CLIL module is divided into two 1 hour lesson.
At the first lesson the teacher will introduce with the help of some videos the Pythagorean Theorem. This theorem will be demonstrated graphically and practically, avoiding a theoretical development that would be tedious and unnecessary at these levels. Once the theorem has been presented to the students, the teacher will show the students its applications. Then they will have to put it into practice with a series of activities in which they will have to discern if a triangle is rectangular knowing its sides as well as finding out the unknown side of a triangle rectangle.
At the second lesson similar exercises will be carried out but in this case related to the student's environment, such as the calculus of the height of an object whose foot is not accessible.
1st Lesson
First of all, students will watch the video 1 and video 2.
Activity 1: Be aware of the vocabulary related to this unit Familiarize with the mathematical language of triangles, lines, angles and segments. |
Activity 2: Identify which is the rectangle triangle The pupils will have to distinguish which is the rectangle triangle of a group of triangles. They will also have to determine it knowing only the length of the sides. |
In case the students require an additional explanation, they can refer to Theory.
2nd Lesson
At the beginning of this session the student will watch the video 3.
Activity 3. Find the unknow side The pupils will have to use the Pythagorean Theorem in order to find the unknow side of a rectangle triangle. |
Once they have finished this activity the students will watch the fourth and last video.
Activity 4. Read the coordinates Students will have to find measures of distances unknown in problems related to their environment, like the measure of the height of an object whose foot is not accessible. |
By the end of this module the students will have to solve the problems at the activities' tab.
Assessment:
Students will hand over the activities at the end of this module. The teacher will pay attention to the use of L2.
In case of doubts, the teacher will explain the content at the blackboard and resolve all the doubts.
