Genetic engineering
Knowledge of genes has made it possible in recent decades to modify the DNA of some species to design organisms with specific characteristics.
Genetic engineering is the set of techniques used in DNA manipulation. In this way we can:
Thus, genes from two beings belonging to the same or different species can be identified, cut and spliced, creating combinations (recombinant DNAs) that do not exist in nature. With this technology it has been possible, for example, to insert human insulin genes into bacteria or human growth hormone genes in mice, which express them as if they were genes of their own. Plants have also been obtained such as potatoes and strawberries that resist frost or make certain insecticides such as in Bt transgenic maize or fish that can survive in environments much colder than those they originally inhabited.
