HOW CAN WE MEASURE HIGH HEIGHTS? - 2 HOURS CLIL MODULE

INTRODUCTION

How can we measure high heights? The fast and obvious answer is to get the top of the object we want to measure and use a measuring tape to do this action.

Ok, but what happens if we can´t do that?...

There are another options. We are going to construct a device to help us to measure any high object we want to. This artefact is called CLINOMETER.

With the clinometer and the help of our friend Pythagoras we are going be able to achieve it!!!

 

------- LESSON ONE -------

LESSON ONE - TASK ONE (15 minutes)

We are going to see the video in the link provided called "How to make a clinometer".

After seing the video, you can talk about it whit your classmates and comment all your doubts wiht your teacher.

 

LESSON ONE - TASK TWO (35 minutes)

We are going to make your own clinometer!!!

Get together in three-people groups and let´s go: let´s make your own clinometer!!! For this, you need this matherials:

Note: we probably will need ten minutes for making the introduction to this unit. So, we will need 60 minutes for the first lesson (10 introduction + 15 video + 35 construct the clinometer = 60 minutes).

LESSON TWO - TASK ONE (30 minutes)

Now you have construct your clinometer, it is time to use it!!! Go to the link "How to use a clinometer" and see the linked video.

After seing the video, you can talk about it whit your classmates and comment all your doubts wiht your teacher.

Finally, it is time to go out and measure three different high objects (streetlights, trees, buildings…). Once you have finish, write your measures down in a sheet of paper and compare them whit the measures of different gruops.

 

LESSON TWO - TASK TWO (30 minutes)

Now, in groups, your have to do a short video (about two minutes) explaining what you have measured and how you have been able to do it.

To elaborate their speech in the appropriate verbal tense, you can visit the webpage in the link "Present Perfect". There you can review all the rules for the use of this verbal tense.

Besides, you need some tools to record and editing your video. You can visit the webpage in the link "Free video editing tools" to learn about different video editing tools.

The videos will be viewed for all your classmates in the next lesson.
