2 hour-clil module mathematics

INTRODUCTION

This 2-Hour Clil module is aimed at students at key 3rd ESO (14-15 years old).

Their level of English is approximately B1 and they have experience from 3rd grade of Primary school.

Nowadays, in high school, students use an Ipad and Laptop instead of books, so the teachers have to combine traditional activities with the new technologies.

The objectives and contents are extracted from the Royal Decree 1467/2007, of November 2, through which it is established the Curriculum and displayed the general ordinance of Secondary School in the Valencian Community and, in particular, for the subject of Mathematics.

We divide up this 2-hour Clil module in two 1 hour lesson. One of them will be about comparing, adding and subtracting rational numbers and the other lesson will be about percent word problems.

1st lesson (1 hour)

In this lesson, students will learn about comparing rational numbers, adding and subtracting rational numbers. 

We'll divide students into groups of 4 people for sharing their doubts, doing the activities together and speaking in L2 between them.

The vocabulary they need is basic, and, with Clistore, they have an easy way to translate. All of the videos have the transcript on Youtube.

First of all, students will watch the video 1.

After that, they will do the following activity in group:

When they have finished the activity, students will watch the video 2, and then, video 3.

 2nd lesson (1 hour)

In this lesson, students will learn about problems word percents.

We'll divide students into groups of 4 people for sharing their doubts, doing the activities together and speaking in L2 between them.

The vocabulary they need is basic, and, with Clistore, they have an easy way to translate. All of the videos have the transcript on Youtube.

First of all, students will watch the video 4.

 Then, the activities they will do is:

1.-In 2006 there were 12,440 Starbucks stores worldwide. This is about 1126% more than 10 years earlier. How many Starbucks stores were there in 1996?
 
2.- Kazane and I just shared a big hamburger that was $58. We also left a 15% tip. How much did we pay in total?
 
 
 
 

Assessment:

Students should hand over the activities at the end of the two lessons. The teacher will observe students and will pay attention to the use of L2.

As this is a lesson, the teacher will consider, with the results of the activities, if students understand the contents. In case students wouldn’t have understood the contents, the teacher would explain in the blackboard the method of solving the problems and doing the activities.
