Save water!

This lesson plan is involved in “Water” teaching unit and it is designed to be carried out with children of 5 - 6 years old who are studying in the third year of the second cycle of preschool education. The estimated time is approximately two hours.

The aims of lesson are:

• Become aware of importance having a responsible use of water
• Learn measures help to save water
• Exercise short-term memory

The language aims are:

• Get basic vocabulary about situations allow for saving water
• Embrace the structures: Stop tap when… and use … instead of….
• Use the structures: Stop tap when… and use … instead of….

Language support:

Teacher guide the students in the use of the L2 using different strategies:

• Miming when necessary
• Drawing on the backboard when necessary
• Making deliberate comparisons with the first language and culture
• Providing different examples
• Using various ways of representing ideas and concepts (eg: visuals, diagrams, various media and technologies)

Activities:

- Activity 1: Listen the song “Let’s Go Save Water” and sing it.

We have had our bright and sunny days,

Now the monsters have come out to prey

Cause we’ve wasted water in many ways

Splurge and splash our water’s gone to waste.

Stop the tap from running all the way

When we clean or brush or scrub away

Stop the shower when we want to soap

So in future we can cope

We have to do something today

Come on, it’s time for a change

Let’s go save water

Before it disappears

Let’s no waste water

We’ll start right now, right here

Let’s go save water

Before it disappears

We won’t waste water

We will protect it, have no fear!

- Activity 2: Think about the important of water and the need for responsible use using the next questions:

• When do we use water?
• For what do plants need water?
• For what do people need water?
• For what do animals need water?

- Activity 3: Go over the actions that appear on the video that help to save water making a drawing of them on the blackboard:

• Stop tap when you clear or brush or scrub away
• Stop tap when you want to soap
• Use a glass for brush your teeth instead of having the tap open
• Use a bucket and a sponge or a hose nozzle for clean your car instead of using a ordinary hose
• Use less than five minutes for shower instead of having a long bath

Then make a drawing of one of these actions in small groups to finally hang them in the class to always remember what actions help to save water.

- Activity 6: Listen to the opening song again and sing it to end the session. Also take advantage of the last 10 minutes to ask the children if they liked the session, what things they liked more and what things they liked less. 

Procedure and methods:

The methodology is mostly playful. We use this kind of methodology because the main aim of this lesson plan is achieving significant learning in the students in a funny way.

The teaching strategies teacher will use in this lesson are:

• Consider children the main protagonist in the lesson. Teacher will encourage the active participation of all students asking them directly, promoting the dialog, offering them some materials to they play and learn playing.
• Before starting the lesson, teacher will share lesson objective with students and what kind of activities have been prepared.
• The transition from one activity to the next will be easy because all activities are related.
• In this lesson there is individual and group work. Activities 1, 2 and 6 will be in big group; activity 3 and 4 will be in small group and activity 5 will require individual work.
• The lesson will conclude with a short review of the lesson asking children their opinion.

Assessment:

 The assessment will be formative and summative.

Teacher will observe and take notes about the learning objectives and attitudes of students in a class schedule. After lesson teacher will also complete the following checklist:
