Computer Networks: Uses, Drawbacks and Types

This unit goes to deal with the basics of computer networks.

But, first you should reflect on the questions collected at the Preliminary Questions. You can access it at the button with that name.

Well, now we are ready to start with the content of this unit.

First of all, you should know what a computer network is.

A computer network is two or more computers (known as nodes in networking) that are connected together, usually by cables (coaxial, fiber optic or twisted pair) or wirelessly (microwaves). But, computers are not only referred to personal computers or laptops, but also to servers (email, printers, applications, file storage, etc.), tablets, mobile phones, and any electronic device with a network interface card.

Moreover, there are different network devices such as switches, routers, hubs, access points and others, that allow networks to improve their performance, to increase their capacity, to manage traffic, among other. But these devices will be seen in detail in next units.

Now, it's time to see which their main uses are.

Its main use is to share "things" among connected users. These "things" are:

1. Information and data (files, pictures, videos, documents, etc.)

2. Resources (disks, printers, programs, etc.)

3. Services (access to a database, chat, games, internet, email, etc.)

From their definition and uses, we are going to analyze their advantages and drawbacks. But, please first think you about it and note them. Then check your answers in next section.
Think about network advantages

Next picture shows you the main benefits and the problems of a network:

To conclude this learning unit, we are going to see the main network topologies. You should watch the next video and answer the questions that appear at the end.

Well, this unit is finishing. But before we are going to review some important concepts by Presentation 1. You can access it at the button with that name.
At the end of this presentation you can assess your knowledge about this unit by the final test. Good luck!

Great! We have finished this first lesson about networking. See you in the next!
