This is a Clilstore unit. You can link all words to dictionaries.

Cell division: mitosis and cytokinesis

In this unit you are going to learn about

Before getting into the contents of this unit

Brainstorming activity: write down some words that come to your mind when thinking in cell and cell division. Write a short paragraph about why you think this process is important.

 Mitosis phases

Now, that you have already thought about the vocabulary of this unit, find here the glossary of this topic:

Look up the meaning and the tranlation of this words.

Now, watch the video which explains the mitosis process.

Once you watch the video, complete the activities 1, 2 and 3.

1. Complete the table with the name of each phase according to the description of its events. After that, order the different phases from1 to 4.

Events that take place

Chromosomes join the mitotic spindle's microtubules and move towards the middle of the cell.

Identical chromatids of each chromosome are separated.

Mitotic spindle's fibers get shorter and take the chromatids to the poles of the cell.

Chromosomes are decondensed to generate the chromatin.

Mitotic spindle disappears.

Nuclear membrane and nucleolus reappear.

Condensed chromatin forms the chromosomes.

Nuclear membrane and nucleolus disappears.

Centrioles move towards the poles.

Mitotic spindle is generated.

2. Cellular cycle is explained in the video. Look at the picture and explain what happens on each phase.

 Cellular cycle

3. The below picture shows the phenomena that occur during the mitosis.

 The phases of mitosis

a) Write the name of each phase and indicate with an arrow the direction in which the events take place.

b) Indicate the cell structures that you see and explain its function during cellular division.

c) Do you think there is a remaining picture? Draw it and explain what is happening on it.

d) How are the chromosomes of the daughters cells comparing them to those of the stem cell?

Finally go over the links provided, you can watch a video and visit some webpages.

After having worked this contents explain in your own words:

Compare you answers with the explanation you have given at the beginning of the unit regarding the importance of the mitosis.
