car diagnostics-Troubleshooting for dummies

Listen to the 7 sounds in the audio clip above.

Activity number 1:

Match the 7 sounds with the 7 titles (no start options), can you figure out which kind of problem the car has?

No start options:

A. Slipping alternator

B. Faulty starter

C. Completely flat battery

D. Fuel problem

E. Timing belt

F. Partially discharged battery

G. Immobiliser

Activity number 2:

Match the sound description below with each no start option above: (what does it sound like?)

  1. The engine fires for a second or so, but then dies. After a couple of attempts at starting, then engine won't fire at all.
  2. A loud metallic 'clunk' when you turn the key to the start position, but the engine does not turn over.
  3. No engine cranking when you turn the key, but an irregular metallic clicking noise from under the bonnet.
  4. Engine cranks slowly on the starter and gradually slows to a stop.
  5. The engine turns over much more freely than usual and the noise 'dips' less frequently than normal.
  6. Engine cranks at normal speed, but doesn't start.
  7. A loud screeching noise, usually just after the engine has started. You may also hear it when manoeuvring slowly or after driving through a deep puddle.
