Introduction to the History of Malta

Introduction to the History of Malta

Malta, a small archipelago in the central Mediterranean, boasts a rich and varied history shaped by its strategic location. Its history spans thousands of years, beginning with the earliest human settlements around 6000 BCE. Malta is famed for its megalithic temples, some of the oldest free-standing structures in the world, highlighting its importance during the Neolithic period.

Throughout history, Malta has been influenced by numerous civilizations, including the Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, and Normans. In 1530, it became home to the Knights of St. John, who transformed the islands into a bastion against Ottoman expansion. This era left a legacy of fortifications, palaces, and churches that still define the Maltese landscape.

The islands later fell under British rule in 1814 and played a pivotal role during World War II, earning the George Cross for their resilience. Malta gained independence in 1964 and became a republic in 1974, joining the European Union in 2004. Today, Malta's history reflects a blend of cultures, making it a unique crossroads of Mediterranean heritage.
