Grammar World Context 9. Objects and Compliments

Have a look at the dialogue and explore any unfamiliar words . Press the word of your interest. The selected word appears with a black background. Task 1. Picture the following situation: two young people who are madly in love with each other are sitting at the foot of the temple discussing their future life. The man has a business of his own - a little hotel on the beach which is suposed to help them live without any troubles. They don't know what to do because the young man's mother doesn't allow them to get married. Follow the instructions in the brackets, using different ypes of objects and compliments.

Sonny: My mother doesn't want ... (complex object).

Mary: She hasn't met me yet. She has ... (predicate compliment).

Sonny: She doesn't need to meet you. She knows you're not from Devon, that you have no ... (predicate compliment), and you work in a call center. You're ... (subject compliment) she cannot welcome.

Mary: Then you must tell ... (indirect object+direct object).

Sonny: I'm trying. It'll cost ... (predicate compliment).

Mary: Try harder. Do you love me, Sonny?

Sonny: My feelings for you cannot be reduced to a single word.

Mary: It's a nice word. People like ... (complex object).

Sonny: You know, it will be easier ... (complex object) when the hotel is ... (subject compliment).

Mary: And what if it isn't?

Sonny: Everything will be all right in the end. And if it is not all right, then it is not yet the end.
