Grammar World Context 3. Oblique Moods in Simple Sentences

Task 1. Picture the following conversation: while watching TV, husband and wife are discussing the unfortunate outcome of their son's marriage that ended in a divorce several years ago. They are trying to cast their minds back and imagine how different it might have been. Complete the utterances logically with your own ideas, using the necessaary oblique moods.

Wife: Charles and I had a talk in the car today. He was good enough to share his thoughts on motherhood.

Husband: What did he say?

Wife: How wonderful Diana was.

Husband: In his place ... .

Wife: He thought her natural. Maybe he's got a point. If only ... .

Husband: Oh, I can't watch this.

Wife. No, no. Wait. Please, no, leave it. We encouraged the match. Oh, that ... . You were very enthusiastic, remember? 

Husband: And what if ... ? She was a nice girl. Then. If only ... . And I was sure he'd give the other one up, or at least make sure his wife toed the line. Isn't that what everyone does?

Wife: But for ... .

Husband: I can't bear it. If you're watching, I'll sleep next door. Early start tomorrow.

Wife: (formulaic expression) ... .

Husband: (formulaic expression) ... . See you in the morning. Not to worry. Night-night.
