Introduction: 

By the end of this LU, you have the sense to valorise your own mistakes and of others.

Content 

Having a low self esteem, and having unrealistic expectations, can have a paralysing fear factor. Even when we don't tend to have this kind of trait, we usually have a big sense of guilt about the mistakes we have made. In this perspective, we tend to think that successful people  never really make mistakes. 

To build a proficient employable character, the skill of leading with mistakes has to be adapted. This means having the ability to not only solve them, but also learn how to lead with smaller mistakes.  






Before going any further, we need to understand the 4 types of mistakes based on two variables - the intention of that mistake with its learning opportunity.

 

Careless mistakes. These types of mistakes mix a low grade of intention with a slow chance of learning. It usually happens with mechanical tasks or things we are proficient in. . These little mistakes are overlooked or ignored with no intention to learn from them. 

High stake mistakes These kinds of mistakes are mixed with a great amount of intention and a big chance to learn from them. Despite these kinds of mistakes usually having consequences,  it is important to learn from them. If we fail an important test, for example, we can learn from this pathway.

Aha Mistakes These kinds of errors, like careless mistakes, have a low grade of intention. But, in this case, we can learn from them. For example, when we forget a friend's birthday. We might have remembered the day, but not the month. When this happens, we will not let it happen again another time - we have learned from our mistake. 

Stretch mistakes. These kinds of mistakes have big intentions and a big chance of learning new abilities. These kinds of errors happen when we are trying fiercely to learn new abilities. When we do so, we make mistakes. It’s the only way. These kinds of mistakes have a good side. We can see what things we have done incorrectly. These kind of errors are part of the learning process




For this LU you will have to do a little reflection. You will have to think about some mistakes you made in the past. You will have to pick one that fulfils two criterias. The first criteria you have to pick is of a small mistake. One that was not a big deal. The second criteria is about how you feel about it. You have to feel disappointed  about that mistake. Take your time. Think of a problem that fulfils the two criterias. This is not a big deal, and you should not feel like it was.

Once you pick the mistake, start reflecting why it was so. Why do you feel so disappointed about it? Did you disappoint someone? Did you learn something from it? Following that, you should understand that you are not alone in this and that some peers have also made this same mistake. How would you feel about it if it were a peer making this mistake and would  you see it as a big deal or not? Is your perspective of the mistake different? If so, why?
