By the end of this learning unit, you will be able to analyse and evaluate your own critical thinking process and improve it. 

 

Content: 

Critical thinking is a fundamental skill. This does not mean that we have this ability from scratch, but that we can work on it throughout our lives - in line with the motto "lifelong learning". 

There are some points on how you can improve your critical thinking, but also evaluate your own practice.

Constant reflection: one of the most important points is to reflect on yourself. Do you regularly ask yourself what you have learned or how you came to your conclusions? If not, use the walk home from work or the time in the shower, for example, to confront yourself with such questions.

 

Use your time: Of course, it is important to allow yourself to relax. But if you find that you are indulging yourself too much, use your time constructively. Find out when and where you can learn best and try to use the time to learn something new.

 

Redefine the way you see things: Do you always think the same way, or do you challenge yourself sometimes? If not, start by challenging yourself. For example, put yourself in another person's shoes and look at things from a different perspective.

 

Analyse influences on your thinking and your life: Have you often thought about why you think the way you do? Analyse your influences and reflect on who and what has shaped your thoughts. What expectations do you have of yourself and where do they come from?

 

Express yourself: Critical thinking goes hand in hand with the ability to express yourself clearly and comprehensibly. When arguing, focus on a few points. You can have a greater impact if you focus on the main argument. This means that it is important that others can clearly understand your reasoning - so give examples or metaphors to achieve greater understanding.

 

Enhance your wellness: Do you take care of your mental and physical health? This also has an influence on critical thinking. Try to be active for at least 30-60 minutes a day. This way you can reduce stress and increase your mental awareness. Besides, you know best when you have the most energy. So, plan difficult tasks for this time period. It is also important to ask for support when you need it.

 

PRACTICAL RELEVANCE:
Reflect on critical thinking

You can integrate reflective processes into your everyday life, here are some examples of how you can go about it: 

- Think of someone you consider to be a critical thinker. For example, an acquaintance, a family member, a professor or a historical person. In a next step, look at the qualities they possess. Feel free to take tips from them and learn from others in this way.  

- Your habits of mind are attitudes and beliefs that influence the way you understand the world. For example, an open-minded attitude or respect for truth. Ask yourself what attitude you want to develop over the next year? What will you change or incorporate in your daily life to develop this practice?

 

Think about it and write down your answers in a diary. You can also discuss your thoughts about this with people you trust and reflect on them together.
