Content:

Teamwork is important! Good teams achieve far better and faster results than lone wolves! In high-performing teams, the members benefit from working together with each other.

However, always keep in mind that good teams cannot simply be thrown together. The composition of a team needs good consideration. Let's assume that we have a well-functioning team in front of us. How do the team members and the company benefit from their teamwork?

+ Use and benefit from different experiences:

Team members learn from each other in terms of their knowledge, values and past work experience.

+ Optimal use of strengths and balancing of weaknesses.

+ Multiplication of available work performance/working time.

+ Goals are achieved faster (and better):

Optimal communication and organisation as well as perfect division of labour within the team ensure that goals are achieved.

+ Promotion of the human feeling of togetherness:

Team members help and support each other, stand up for each other and pull together.

+ Higher employee satisfaction and morale

+ Increased staff loyalty

+ Side effects of teamwork: team members have fun whilst working together and motivate each other!

However, should mistakes have been made in the team composition, too little consideration given to the individual personalities in the team or a task has been assigned to a team that isn’t well-suited to teamwork, then even teamwork has its limits. Let us now have a look at the disadvantages of teamwork:

- Increased effort in coordinating with each other:

the organisational effort is much higher compared to individual work.

- Increased effort in communicating with each other:

Team members have to communicate clearly with each other, withheld information makes cooperation more difficult.

- Dependence on work, quality demands, other team members’ organisation:

Work tasks that are cumulative in nature and are dependent on different members completing different parts of them quickly lead to disagreement if one member does not complete his or her task on time.

- Group dynamic, blocking phenomenon, e.g. social loafing

- Interpersonal problems, from antipathy to open bullying

- Poor leadership qualities and leadership skills of the team leader impede communication, organisation and consequently do not help to achieve goals

- Poorly coordinated teamwork means it takes longer to achieve goals.

As is so often the case, there is not always just one side to the story- i.e. only advantages or disadvantages. In order to be able to assess a way of working, such as teamwork in particular, one must also be aware of all the framework conditions. In conclusion, we can determine that a well-functioning team can certainly solve a task suitable for teamwork faster and better than an individual working on their own.
