- Cultivate curiosity. One of the key steps to have a better glimpse of others emotions is to cultivate your curiosity. You can do this by spending time with people you know less well. Ask them about their life, their hobbies, their life. You also can use social media to follow people from different backgrounds. Be present when people speak with you. Finlay , if you can, visit different places.
- Step out of your comfort zone. It can be hard. You can do this by trying things like experiencing what it is like to do something you are unable to do. Reach for support when you are in this situation. Accept it when you feel helpless
- Receive feedback. To do this, you have to practice active listening.
- Examine your biases. This step is key. For examining your biases it is important to find opportunities to mix with people from different backgrounds. Try to talk with people about their lives and what they consider important. When you share similarities with others, try to focus with full respect on the differences.
- Walk in the shoes of others. Try to understand what it is like for others. Ask yourself questions like how they live, how it is their work. Spend time with others, ask yourself what gives them happiness and what are their dreams.
- Difficult respectful conversations. Try to discuss with people with different points of view about life. In those, listen without interrupting, be open about new ideas and apologise if you hurt others feelings. Research the issue. Understand where a point of view has come from and how it affects the people involved.
- Join a shared cause. Finding a community project where help is another way to improve your ability to understand others emotions.
- Read widely. One of the best ways for teaching different points of view is reading. Find stories from different people and different perspectives.
