Introduction:

By the end of this LU you will understand how to apply social skills.

Content:

Our social skills are the ways in which we communicate and interact with each other, both verbally and non-verbally, including gestures, body language and appearance.

If you feel like your low social skills are affecting your social life and your career, follow these strategies to improve them:

  1. Behave like a social person even if you don’t feel like it. Make the decision to talk to new people even if you are feeling nervous about it. Over time it will get easier and you will improve your social skills.
  2. Start small, if some actions feel overwhelming try going to the restaurant and order your food.
  3. Ask open-ended questions to encourage others to talk if you don’t want the attention on you in a conversation.
  4. Encourage others to talk about themselves and show you are interested in hearing what is being said.
  5. Create small goals for yourself to practice a particular skill or improve your social life.
  6. Pay attention to your body language: try to appear relaxed, open to conversation and make appropriate amounts of eye contact.
  7. Identify and replace negative thoughts about your social interactions that are dragging you down and replace them with more realistic thoughts.

Let’s recap to finish off on what are social skills and how to improve them:
