How can we get to know ourselves better and relate better to others? Where should we start working on emotional intelligence?
A good work plan for the improvement of our emotional intelligence should include at least the following areas.
This internal self-analysis is essential as a starting point. If we are not able to manage this facet on an internal level, we will find it very difficult to manage it on a social level, recognising the emotions of others.
According to Goleman, people who have acquired emotional awareness are also capable of:
In order to do this, they must also be familiar with the types of emotions, their intensity and polarity. Something important is the classification of emotions, which, beyond being "positive" or "negative", provoke different types of emotional and physiological effects on us.
Exercises such as self-observation, studying how the intensity of emotions evolves as a result of specific events or the verbal and non-verbal language that comes with them, will help to develop this knowledge of emotions.
Once we know how to apply this process to ourselves, we can be open to recognising and taking into account the emotions of others in our own actions.
Following this training on the internal level, the control of emotions will help to improve our decision making. How? Neutralising our impulses and allowing our actions to be coherent with our personal goals.
It is common to confuse the term control of emotions with blocking or denial of emotions. Under no circumstances, blocking our emotions will lead us to make better decisions. This would limit us in our personal and work life, preventing us from expressing ourselves clearly, saying no, or saying what we really think and feel. In other words, this block will avoid us being assertive.
Behind the emotional blockage there is fear, fear of leaving a comfort zone that far from being the solution, becomes the problem. What was initially a defence mechanism, now becomes a limitation, and not only in situations of uncertainty, stress or fear.
This management or control of emotions can be worked through exercises on tolerance to frustration, stress, impulsivity or anger. Also by working on self-motivation, the search for internal purposes, driving forces or the adoption of a positive attitude towards life.
This point of the work plan refers to the external or social sphere of emotional intelligence. When we talk about this social sphere, we refer to recognising the emotions of others, that is, empathy or self-awareness of the emotions of others.
To achieve this, it is necessary to work on picking up emotional signals from people and groups. It also facilitates the development of awareness of relationships (how I feel, how they feel, how we feel) and the internal emotional processes of a team, organisation or community, which is highly influential in our working lives.
This work can be developed through exercises on effective and assertive communication, body language and non-verbal communication, understanding the other's perspective and motivation, active listening and above all, empathy.
