Adopting flexibility is not an easy task. However there are some tips that can make this process easier. These tips won't make you more flexible, but they are very helpful to adopt it.
- Focus on your core values. Being versatile does not mean that we should accept everything. Knowing what our core values are can help us to know what are anchors. Despite having anchors that could seem that would harm our flexibility, having the correct ones can be helpful. It can be helpful even when we are requested for doing something unethical. Being flexible does not mean always saying yes.
- Be open minded. When you have to do a nonmechanical task, it is always good to think about it from different perspectives. To embrace this is helpful to embrace new ideas from different people. Listening and understanding is key for this ability. You will be freer. When a new task is given to you, try to think how you can get new abilities or how your career can improve for doing it.
- Develop your skill set. If you don't learn new skills you will be less ready for facing unexpected situations. Being curious about changes and findings in your field is going to make you more versatile in a changing background. Make an effort in working with tasks or people you usually avoid, this could help you go out of your comfort zone”. Try to find a way to do things easier when you do so.
- Be optimistic. It can be difficult to be optimistic in large and long projects. We must know to look on the bright side of them. We must focus on the positive things and be more resilient. When our routine gets broken down by small changes, instead of getting down we should embrace it. This can be a great opportunity to learn new skills or to work with new coworkers.
- Stay Calm. If something unexpected happens, stay calm. Sometimes when this happens we tend to get anxious. Is important to manage that stress. Learning to do so will help your flexibility a lot.
- Plan ahead. Making the right plans can help you be more flexible. When you don't adapt plans to situations, plans can make your flexibility worse, but if you can predict some alternatives for upcoming outcomes, you will be more flexible at that time.
- Have a strong support network. Being flexible does not mean to be in a freefall. Having a strong support network will help having a greater amount of freedom in an uneasy situation. In times of flux, you will have who to rely on.
