Having a low self-esteem can make it difficult to say no in certain situations. This situation is often seen in workspaces. Workers tend to accept tasks that sometimes are above  their contractual duties. This situation can create distress situations in the workers, and , it can lower the levels of self-confidence of some workers involved in tasks above f their responsibility, causing  negative feedback in this set of dynamics.

Personal boundaries are important in each space of our lives. Work is one of these spaces. These kinds of boundaries can be time related, like working overtime or working on days off but also it can be related to accepting other conditions.

Some examples of strong boundaries are not feeling the need to reply to messages straight away, saying no when you can't take others’ errands, delegating work that you can’t fulfill, choosing to not attend events where we are invited when we don't want to.

To set limits properly, first you have to visualize and communicate them.

For visualizing your limits you have to think about yourself. You have to set aside some time to reflect on the state of your life. Ask yourself:

Then, you have to take a pen and a paper. In that paper you are going to draw a circle. In that circle you are going to write down all the things that make you feel good, happy, valued, safe … . Things such as daily routines, words from your loved ones, freedom to spend your spare time, your personal hobbies, leaving your stress in your workspace.

Once your circle is complete, you will have to write down all the things making you fell stress and discomfort outside the circle. Things such as,  my boss telling me to work overtime,  fear of not achieving my career goals, my roommate eating my food…

Maybe some of the things causing us discomfort aren't work related, but they are important for the exercise.
