Content

According to the social psychologist Gordon Allport, prejudice is linked to categorical thinking. Our mental frames tend to put our inputs in prefixed boxes due to generating shortways to make reality easier to understand. According to this theory , we are prefixed to fall in prejudgeices. We carve lists, categories , classifications…

Newer perspectives and findings in this topic had added power relation perspectives, and how we tend to value inner group things like if they were better than outer group things. Nonetheless, knowing our basis should help us to avoid prejudices.

We can understand that some of the ways we perceive reality had , in fact, more relation with our prefixed frames and with our framing carving than with the inputs themselves. If we reflect on this, we can avoid to fall in prejudices and perceive the reality from the others

Normally, prejudices operate against groups with limited amounts of power. In the current EU we can see prejudices applied to gender, sexual orientation, nationalities, class, races, religions or abilities.

Prejudices vary from group to group. Also they vary in time. They depend on social dynamics. For example, in country A the people of country B could be seen as lazy, but this won't occur in country B, where they will see themselves in a positive way. Also, they can change with the time. For example, in the last few years, despite lots of work still remaining, prejudices against people with disabilities in works spaces have changed.

Prejudices operate as emotions. They are very linked to Stereotyping. Stereotyping is the act of thinking actively that certain traits belong to certain groups. Prejudices and Steroyipong could lead to discrimination. Discrimination is a behaivour, in withc certaing group acts agains idividuals of certain gropus for belonging to certain group.
