Empowered people take control of their lives by setting goals and taking action to achieve them. They are confident, focused and comfortable making decisions that guide them towards the future.
But how can we empower ourselves?
- Develop a positive attitude. If you believe that you control your destiny rather than allocating it to fate or circumstance, you are more likely to take charge of your future. Evaluate your strengths and weaknesses, pursue your passions and trust your skills.
- Set reasonable goals Measurable and achievable goals are really important for empowerment. Start with smaller steps to achieve bigger goals.
- Surround yourself with positive people. Pessimism and negativity are contagious. Surround yourself with like-minded people that can help you feel empowered to achieve your goals.
- Practice self-care. This includes any activity that you do for yourself to feel healthy and happy. From exercising to treating yourself. Remember to schedule time for relaxation and you will be more productive and confident.
- Use positive self-talk. Focus on what you can do as opposed to the things that you cannot. Practising self affirmation and displaying confidence in your ability to achieve your goals can help you start taking steps to achieve them.
- Be assertive. Empowered people feel comfortable expressing their ideas, thoughts and needs. If you are working with another colleague on a project and you are doing most of the work, don’t feel guilty about addressing the issue and asking them to do their part.
- Create an action list. Empowered people exhibit a growth mindset, are comfortable learning new skills and abilities and take action. They understand that success does not come overnight but after a series of decisions and actions. Create an action list with all the steps to achieve your goals.
- Live a self-empowered life. Taking steps to live the life that you want will make you happier, more fulfilled and more satisfied with your career.

Taking steps to live the life that you want will make you happier, more fulfilled and more satisfied with your career.
The words in bold are known as Comparatives. As the examples above show, there are 2 ways to form a comparative. If the adjective has only 1 syllable then add an ‘er’ to the adjective + noun (smaller + steps & bigger + goals & happier + career). If the adjective has 2 or more syllables it takes ‘more’ in front of it + noun after it (more fulfilled & more satisfied + career).
