Leading people or a team is a challenge and that is exactly what the team leader supposed to do. Imagine your boss assigns you seven employees out of the blue. Together, you have to come up with a new employer branding strategy. You are well situated professionally, but you aren’t going to get a lot of training for your leadership role. You are supposed to start your role as team leader tomorrow.

Are you wondering how you should approach this challenge as a young team leader? Here are a few tips to help you get off to a good start as a successful team leader:

Tip 1: Get to know your team members

Familiarise yourself with each person at the beginning. Only when you know who has what strengths and weaknesses can you distribute the tasks appropriately and respond to their personalities.

Tip 2: Listen and communicate openly

Before you make any decisions yourself, listen to the arguments of your team members. Encourage them to listen to each other.

Tip 3: Make decisions together

Make your decisions together. It is clear that you, as the leader, have the last word but make the decision together. This way the whole team will support the decision.

Tip 4: Motivation through information

You can motivate your team members by giving them information on a regular basis. To ensure smooth workflow, it is important to communicate all information effectively and transparently. This creates a good basis of trust on the one hand and on the other hand leaves nobody feeling left out.

Tip 5: Take responsibility

As a team leader, you are the link between your team and your boss. Show your team that you stand up for the values of the company. Determine how you will work together as a team to achieve your goals.

Tip 6: The team “mum”

Give your team the feeling that they can always come to you with problems. Be empathetic and listen to your team members.

Tip 7: Ensure team support

You should start by looking at the strengths and weaknesses of your members. Try to identify them using different methods. Help your team members to develop their skills.

Tip 8: The tone makes the music

Always communicate with your team in an appreciative way. Remember to be clear so that each member knows what needs to be done.

Tip 9: Allocate tasks according to skill set and stick to realistic goals

When distributing tasks, take into account the strengths and abilities of the individual team members. They should not be over- or under-challenged. Coordinate the goals with their abilities. They should be achievable for the team members.

Tip 10: Be a role model

No matter what you do, always keep in mind that as a leader you are a role model. Both your behaviour, your performance and your work strategy will be closely observed. The way you work is the way your team will work.

NOTE: No perfect team leader has ever fallen from the sky. Every new task takes time. Don’t expect yourself to do everything right immediately. Do your best and enjoy your new role. Then you will be able to pass on this positive feeling to your team members which will put you and your team on the right track.
