EQF LEVEL (INTERNAL REFERENCE): 3

keywords

Introduction:

Expected Learning outcomes:

By the end of this learning unit, you will know and understand the role of a leader and can determine the eight different leadership roles, mapping them on the four available dimensions (flexibility vs. stability and internal vs. external focus).

Content:

Unlike a group, a team is about achieving a specific goal. Each team member is committed, more or less, to pursuing this goal and is expected to contribute accordingly. Unfortunately, the path toward achieving the goal is not always easy. Because in our modern and networked work environment, we are constantly confronted with conflicting goals for which clear decisions are needed over and over again.

DEFINITION

Conflict of objectives: A conflict that arises when two or more objectives are to be pursued whose simultaneous, full fulfilment is not possible

And this is where leaders play an important role. They make decisions in response to conflicting goals. It is necessary for leaders to be able to live with the existence of constant conflicting goals and to manage them in such a way that they remain trustworthy and credible for the team members

EXAMPLE:
Individual vs. collective
An employee is unable to perform as required in the team for a longer period of time due to private problems. The other team members have to compensate for the lack of performance by working extra hours. In this situation, the leader has to ask himself whether this situation is still acceptable for the whole team or whether it will soon lead to team members starting to rebel.

Preserve vs. change
Many processes may have worked well for years. There is a danger of neglecting the necessary steps towards change. When and to what extent changes should be implemented is not always clear. It is the manager's responsibility to assess this conflict of goals accordingly and to act if necessary.

The eight roles of the leader:

There is no clear description of the leader's tasks. However, eight roles can be described that a leader should be able to adopt depending on the situation. These defined roles move along two dimensions: Flexibility vs. stability and internal vs. external focus. (see picture)
