To set buildings BIM (Building Information Modelling) into surrounding environment GIS (Geographic Information Systems) has a huge potential to provide holistic perspective and improve efficiency in all steps of community planning. It helps e.g. to select most suitable site, optimise logistics, count energy flows, assess risks, among many other applications. Altogether, BIM-GIS integration reduces both costs and environmental impacts of new constructions as well as of existing buildings. Since it is a relatively new approach, it is still limited by knowledge gaps and lack of skills.
State of the art: BIM (Building Information Modelling) and GIS (Geographic Information Systems) technologies are increasingly used both in urban, facility and infrastructure planning. The best improvement of the processes is though achieved when the BIM and GIS approaches are used simultaneously; in other words, when the buildings and constructions are visualised and analysed together with their surroundings. It results in higher effectivity and sustainability by reducing time, costs and carbon footprints.
Objectives: Integration of BIM and GIS sectors requires high expertise from professionals of both domains. Lack of skilled personnel is probably the main constrain why the integration does not proceed faster. The main goal of the BIRGIT project is thus to train specialists able to unify the approaches and to solve problems connected with this unification.
Expected results: More specifically, we aim to carefully plan and develop new learning materials that will subsequently upgrade VET programs within the consortium. First, we will map the needs of different stakeholders, in order to focus on the right skills most crucial on the labour market. Then, we will specify desired learning objectives and analyse existing BIM-GIS training materials. Next step will be to adapt these materials to different languages and national needs, as well as to harmonise datasets for hands-on exercises.
However, the core activity will be the development of the new courses, fulfilling the required learning objectives. Creation of these materials will be based on the SCRUM methodology that helps teams to work together. Different profiles of the consortium members guarantee the expertise in both BIM and GIS domains. Finally, we will test the new courses in the real training context to get feedback directly from the trainees. Their insights will help us to further improve the learning materials.
Outputs: The new courses will cover the latest advancements in both BIM and GIS technologies and focus on competencies for their successful integration. Video-lectures, data sets, assignments, reading suggestions and test questionnaires will be combined in each of the courses to cover diverse learning styles. Project results will be provided under open licences and we plan several dissemination events.
The goal of this activity is to specify the requirements on integrated GIS-BIM training. Some requirements have already been implemented within existing VET programs and courses, but due to societal development with increased levels of digitalization, additional requirements have been formulated. The main target group of this project result is VET providers, both project partners and external providers. Also, companies working in the sector are expected to make use of the requirement analysis, when modifying their business offers.
It is recognised that partners providing BIM courses today are lacking basic courses on GIS and vice versa. The goal of this activity is to reuse existing courses within the partnership and localize / translate them for usage by another partner. The term “localization” means in this context that courses are translated from one context (language etc) and adopted to national needs in another context.
Knowing the needs and desired learning outcomes from the previous PRs, we will develop new courses optimally filling the knowledge gaps.
Above all, we plan to connect competencies from BIM and GIS domains. We aim that the trainees shall be able to coordinate various BIM- and GIS specialists, working on the same project. This synchronisation will allow insights that would remain hidden without the BIM-GIS integration, by enhancing advanced analyses to investigate patterns, assess risks or to include time- and cost-, the 4D and 5D, dimensions.
We intend to develop a modular training for both professionals and beginners. Experts with previous knowledge could select courses to upskill themselves, while the new trainees would follow the whole educational package. The new courses will update the VET programs within the partnership and thus improve their quality.
The goal of this activity is to assess the quality of the learning materials being produced, to suggest improvements and to implement a selected set of improvements.
In order to evaluate the quality of the BIM-GIS training offers developed by the project and the related learning material, the Consortium is expected to test and validate such training, both in classroom settings and in online form. The task involves both the planning and organisational aspects of these training actions and the methods for collecting and processing the feedback received for the users participating in those actions.
Such process intends to inform the eventual update and adjustment of the learning materials, for their further adoption and diffusion within partners’ organizations and across EU countries.
