Introduction:

Expected Learning outcomes:

By the end of this learning unit, you will know what communication is and that it not just consists of the spoken word.

Content:

We encounter communication everywhere in our everyday lives. No matter with whom we come into contact, we automatically exchange information with other people. It is therefore not possible not to communicate, as the famous philosopher Paul Watzlawik already said. After all, people do not always have to talk to each other to be communication.

DEFINITION: Communication comes from the Latin word "communicatio", which means communication. Communication means the exchange of messages and information between at least two people. In this context, communication can take place via speech and the so-called non-verbal language. This includes, among other things, gestures and facial expressions.

In addition to verbal and nonverbal communication, another division also falls under the concept of communication. Mass media, such as advertising, are also communication. Information is sent from one place to a large number of so-called recipients. If you chat with a person, make eye contact or turn away from him or her demonstratively, you are already communicating. This means that there are many different ways of exchanging information and passing it on. If interlocutors lack the necessary skills to talk to each other, misunderstandings and anger can easily result. The feeling of not being understood can be frustrating and affect the quality of the relationship between people. The good news is, it is possible to learn and practice constructive communication. So, it's never too late to address the issue of communication and improve your skills in it. Especially in today's world of globalization and digitalization, we can communicate with each other at any time and through a variety of means. So constructive communication is probably more important than ever. Because only when my needs and thoughts are understood can the appropriate actions be taken. This applies both to the private sphere but especially to the world of work.

REMEMBER: Communication does not only mean a conversation between at least two people, but also the exchange via non-verbal communication channels such as facial expressions and gestures.
