How to apply the VUCA model: how to stay upright in the storm

VUCA leadership requires the ability to adapt, continuously learn, and make the most of situations as they take shape. To explore effective VUCA leadership, let's look at some real-world examples of how organizations have responded to the VUCA world by adopting an agile approach:

Lenovo: protect and attack

Lenovo is an excellent example of effective leadership in a VUCA world. In the early 2000s, the company struggled to expand and responded poorly to market developments. Shortly thereafter, it was bought back for the sum of $200 million. Then,  in 2014 Lenovo surpassed Apple in China. How did this breakthrough come about? According to one study, Lenovo's success is based on two principles, both of which are examples of VUCA leadership:

  1. Balance the "attack and protect" strategy . Lenovo protects areas where it already has an advantage, while attacking areas where it believes there is potential for growth.
  2. Developing the next generation of VUCA leadership. Lenovo strongly believes in developing leaders who can think across borders and cultures.

Siemens "Healthineers": emotional intelligence and technical expertise

Siemens Healthineers acknowledged that the V factors. U. C. A were affecting performance among leaders in its Brazil business. So when traditional approaches didn't work, they decided to think outside the box. Instead of focusing on problems, the company decided to engage with people. They concluded that although they had focused on the technical skills of their leaders in the past, in a VUCA world this would not be enough to move their business forward. In fact, instead of just assessing technical skills, but focusing on soft skills such as emotional intelligence, they were able to dramatically strengthen their workforce in Brazil, better preparing them to meet the challenges of the VUCA world.
