Gostra Running Commentary

Task 1

Read and make sure that you understand all the words by using the Multidict Function.

Festas are special in Malta. Apart from the religious church celebrations there are other less religious and spectacular events for the locals to enjoy. The towns around the coast often include a competition called a Gostra. A large wooden pole is covered in grease or fat which makes it very slippery. A flag is stuck to one end of the pole. The pole is placed over the water. The compitors try to run up to the end of the pole to grab the flag. It is very difficult. The pole is so slippery that no one reaches the flag and they fall into the sea. The competitors all take their turn till one of them wins by pulling the flag off the pole. The video below is from such a competition in St.Julians 2017.

Task 2

We use the present simple tense when we want to talk about fixed habits or routines – things that don’t change.

We use the present continuous to talk about actions which are happening at the present moment, as in a running commentary.

Compare these two statements:

 

Task 3

Make a list of all the verbs used in Task 1.

Task 4

You are going to try and prepare a running commentary. You need to describe what is happening as you watch it happening in the video below.

 

Task 5

Write down the running commentary using the present continuous tense.
